Congrats to our first awardee, Amal Mohamed
We're super excited to announce our very first recipient of the 2nd Chance Opportunity Scholarship Award, Amal Mohamed
Amal is a current student at Oregon State University and Linn-Benton Community College Majoring in Creative Writing with a minor in Psychology.
Amal has dreams of becoming an author,
“publishing poetry books, non-fiction books, and more regarding the silent yet daily struggles of Somali muslim women. LBCC has incredible and advocating staff that have genuine support for your educational goals through mentorship, constant zoom calls, and more.

I currently have no financial support or any kind of support from family.
"I became independent and all I want is a college degree by any means. Every year was a new cycle of financial difficulties and heartache knowing I didn't have my family's support to pursue higher education. They didn't believe I needed college and preferred me to stay at home and I refused and never looked back."
Amal's Story
Amal worked as a door dasher in between classes and study sessions. In her application, Amal shares that she is the only person in her "entire bloodline" that is enrolled and attending a 4-year institution.
"I just want to be a role model for my four younger siblings, to show them that African Americans can succeed in high education and be the backbone of this nation. I can't even begin to fathom the way I would feel if assisted. I would feel heard and feel even more motivated, that others are investing resources for my future."
Congratulations Amal!
Please help us celebrate this wonderful student and all her hard work.
The Valencia Cooper 2nd Chance Opportunity Scholarship Award will be solely for African American/Black students who would like to attend a Community College within the state of Oregon. Apply Now for your chance to win this scholarship.
